The L. J. Roemer Mfg. Co. began business in 1979, and was founded by Leonard
J. Roemer, a machinist by trade, a fisherman at heart. A short story as to
what prompted Len to invent the Roemer Release follows.
Len had been in the Florida Keys on a vacation and caught a 98 lb. Tarpon on
a heavy-duty bass rod that he had purchased a couple of weeks prior. Upon
returning home to Rochester, New York, Len resumed fishing weekends in Henderson
Harbor, N.Y. Trout and Salmon fishing was in it's infancy at the time in
Lake Ontario and Len thought he would give it a try. He purchased a
downrigger and release, and set out on the Salmon River. The release
malfunctioned and broke his new rod; he said, "I can come up with something
better than this!"
He immediately went to work designing and building the very first Roemer
Release. After 3 1/2 years of development and over 2 years of testing by
veteran fishing guilds of Henderson Harbor, N.Y., the Roemer Release was
officially introduced to the public.
In 2000 Len decided to retire a second time (first time being after 38 years
as a machinist/prototype builder for Eastman Kodak Co., and turned the
business over to his daughter Susan and her husband Ray.
Len's fishing philosophy is that after spending thousands of dollars on a
boat and hundreds more on fishing equipment, you shouldn't short change yourself
on an inexpensive and/or poorly designed release.
The Roemer Release has undergone several design improvements and is is now
favored by most fisherman that have tried it.
